Chainsaw Carving for Beginners

The art of chainsaw carving is elaborate and exhilarating. This form of carving became renowned in the 1980s after a world championship competition in the United States. Since then, chainsaw carvers have been constructing intricate designs resulting in truly unique and one of a kind pieces.

There are a few things to consider before you begin utilising chainsaws to create one of kind sculptures and furniture. Before you commence the practice, it is crucial to ensure that you have the appropriate safety gear accessible to prevent any injuries. Protective clothing such as chainsaw chaps, eye protection and ear muffs should always be worn.

It is also imperative to ensure that you are using the right chainsaw for the job. Depending on the creation that you are hoping to achieve, you may need to incorporate a variety of different length saws. A larger saw is best to use at the commencement of your project, or when you need to remove large chunks, while smaller saws are the perfect tool for detailing. You also need to be aware of the sharpness of the chain that you are using, as a blunt chain can impede the final design.

Husqvarna chainsaws are built with the best technology, and are perfect for those wanting to master the art of chainsaw carving. The Husqvarna 535iXP battery chainsaw is a perfect start, due to its ease of use, no direct operator emissions, robust and durable design. It can also be fitted with a Husqvarna carving bar that has a smaller nose radius, making it a perfect choice for sculpting and other precision work.  Additionally, our in-house developed, advanced brushless motor is 25 % more efficient than a standard brush motor. This means that the motor provides high and consistent torque.

It is also essential to remember that chainsaw carving is a lengthy process and takes time to perfect. The key to perfecting the art is to break down the project, and to remove smaller sections over big ones. However, anything is possible with a 535iXP Husqvarna chainsaw no matter your level of expertise. You can follow Husqvarna guy Bob’s instructions below to carve your own chair!

The Chair

1. Begin by deciding the length of your chair.

2. Use your Husqvarna chainsaw to cut a ‘V’ shape in the centre of the log, making sure that you don’t go further than half way.

3. Make the exact same cut at a 90-degree angle. This will help determine the thickness of the chair legs.

4. Cut straight down the sides of the exposed leg edges to remove all the bark.

5. Flip over the chair and make a cut at about 105-degrees. This will create a slight angle and forms the back rest. Make sure that there is enough space left between the legs and the bottom of the back rest.

6. Flip the chair on its side and make an incision to meet the previous cut.

7. You can now enjoy your new chair!

The Bookshelf

1. Start by cutting your log into four tall “pie slices”.

2. Make an incision in the middle of the log with the same technique that you would use to fell a tree: One cut straight in from the side and the other slightly tilted from the top down.

The lower shelf is made by two simple cuts from the side, determining the shelf depth, and one final incision to remove the inside part.

3. Make a couple of notches in the top of the log.

4. Use a chisel, or a similar tool, to chip out the remaining wood – and you are done!
