What is firmware?

Firmware is data stored inside a product (such as an Automower® robotic lawn mower), providing instructions that enables the product to perform basic tasks and functions and communicate with other devices. 

In contrast to software, that most often is meant to be viewed or interacted with by the user, firmware refers to fixed data.
