How to keep the chain tight on the chainsaw

The more you use a chain, the longer it becomes. A slack chain can jump off and cause serious or even fatal injuries.

It is therefore important to adjust the chain regularly to take up the slack.

Check the chain tension every time your refuel.

NOTE: A new saw chain has a running-in period during which you should check the tension more frequently.

How to tension a chainsaw chain

WARNING: always use the appropriate safety glasses and protective gloves before trying to adjust the chain on your chainsaw:

  1. Make sure the engine is off and give the bar and chain time to cool down before attempting to adjust the chain tension.
  2. Loosen the bar nuts, while picking up on the bar and chain; use either a thumb wheel or a screw driver to tighten the chain until there is no slack in the chain.
    CAUTION: do not overtight!
  3. Continue to pick up on the bar while you tighten the bar nuts.
