How to get involved in pole climbing

The sport of pole climbing is one that tests balance, strength, endurance and flat out determination. Competitors don harnesses, helmets, spiked shoes and use climbing equipment to run vertically up a pole while a clock times their efforts. Here we look at how to get involved in pole climbing.
From our conversations at events over the years we know that many of the men and women involved in pole climbing are tree surgeons and work in arboriculture. Often fearless when it comes to working between branches, they’re trained to perform at their best at a height so naturally thrive in the competition. Others we’ve spoken to can work in ground care and landscape design. Whatever their occupation we’re pleased to see that climbers regularly look to Husqvarna for high performing products.

What is pole climbing?

As you’d imagine, the visual nature of the sport brings in quite a crowd at various trade shows across both the UK and the rest of the world. Husqvarna regularly sponsors pole climbing events and this year like years previous we’ll be at the APF Exhibition in Warwickshire for the World Pole Climbing Championships. Husqvarna sponsors the pole climbing at the APF as we love to see some of the best climbers, from around the world, in action, many of whom work in our industry and use our products.

Joining the community

One of the greatest things about the sport is undoubtedly the sense of community it brings with it. Pole climbers come from all corners and meet up at events across the country to test themselves in a sport which they love. The Track vs. Tree Challenge

In 2014 we did something quite special at the APF. To celebrate the World Pole Climbing Championships we had Olympic sprinter Harry Aikines-Aryeetey take on pole climber Grant Gallier in a very unique race. The Track vs. Tree challenge saw Harry sprint horizontally while Grant tore up the pole towards the sky. This was hosted by none other than Gold medallist and TV personality Iwan Thomas on a day in which pole climbing grabbed some headlines. Who do you think won?

    WLC 2018 Starts August 2nd!

    The 33rd World Logging Championships will begin in Lillehammer, Norway on August 2, with more than 100 loggers participating this year for the World Logging Championship title. New for this round of the WLC is a seperate women's class, in which one woman from each country can compete. Women still have the possibility to compete in the regular elite and junior class.

    Husqvarna will once again be participating with our competitors using the 576 XP, 572 XP and 372 XP championship chainsaws to compete in their challenges! 

    As always, the WLC will be divided into different individual disciplines plus the exciting team relay race, which are inspired by the same procedures as the professionals exercise in their everyday work. These include tree felling, fitting another chain, bucking by combined cuts, precision bucking and limbing.
